There’s only a few more months before Payday Super becomes the law of the land. For many businesses, the change in superannuation pay frequency may require other changes to their pay procedures, such as a modification to pay frequency and additional reporting requirements for Single Touch Payroll.
The Australian Tax Office has released a checklist guide walking businesses through the steps they must take and the questions they must ask themselves before the 1 July 2026 commencement.
New Single Touch Payroll requirements include the reporting of not just super liability, but also qualifying earnings (QE). Sybiz Visipay introduced QE in version 26.00, to replace Ordinary Time Earnings (OTE). Sybiz Visipay users must review each of their pay items to flag items which count as Qualifying Earnings. When upgrading, pay items that are set to Superannuation Does Apply will be flagged as QE. If you’re paying super on items you are not required to, simply uncheck the QE flag. The ATO has resources available to guide you in making these determinations.
Reporting of QE will be required under STP2 from 1 July 2026 and is expected to be supported from Sybiz 26.10 for the 2026/27 financial year. Consult with your Authorised Sybiz Business Partner now to ensure you’re on track to upgrade to the most current version of Sybiz Visipay when it becomes available.
Included with the checklist is a separate checklist for businesses that need to transition away from the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH), which will close its doors on 1 July 2026 as part of Payday Super reform. The checklist is available as a PDF directly from the ATO.
For businesses that currently pay superannuation quarterly, the ATO recommends that the January-March quarter (due 28 April 2026) be the last payment you make through the SBSCH. After your last superannuation payment through the SBSCH, be sure to download each of your employees’ details and payment transaction records before 30 June 2026, as you will no longer have access to the SBSCH to do so after the closure date.
Keep in mind that the April-June quarter payment (due 28 July 2026) cannot be made using the SBSCH after 30 June 2026, so don’t delay in transitioning to and testing an alternate provider before then.
