Sybiz 26 brought with it native SMS functionalities, allowing messages to be sent directly from Sybiz Vision and SMS activities logged within CRM. This new flexibility lets businesses reach out to their customers instantly in an easily recognized format direct to their mobile phones, saving on both time and paperwork.
As convenient as SMS is for communication, the format is not without its risk. The short format is easy to spoof, and scammers are capable of sending messages posing as legitimate businesses, tricking unsuspecting recipients into clicking dodgy links and potentially give up sensitive information to a third party. In only 160 characters, how can one tell that a text message from a business is legitimate?
The Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) understands these consumer concerns, and in December announced the SMS Sender ID Register. The register sets specific rules for who can used a sender ID — a text label that appears as the sender of your SMS instead of a phone number — to reduce spoofing and scam SMS texts. Beginning 1 July 2026, if a sender ID is not registered, it will be replaced with the word “unverified,” letting the recipient of the text know that the text could be a potential scam.
The sender ID you choose must be clearly related to your core business identity. You can register your sender ID by contacting your telco provider. Check to see if your provider has been approved to participate in the registry. In these days of multiple communication avenues, building customer trust is essential to conducting ongoing business. Take advantage of this extra layer of protection today.
